Standard Life: Global retail estate could return ten per cent

Standard Life Investments has recommended investments in global real estate as returns could reach as much as ten per cent over the next three years.

Anne Breen, head of real estate research and strategy, said that this was due to the recovering demand for commercial property.

She said that global capital flows into real estate have recovered since 2008 and low interest rates are encouraging investors to seek new sources of income.

According to the Financial Times, Ms Breen said: "Commercial real estate is now truly a global market. The UK is further into the recovery phase than many other western markets.

"Nevertheless, it still looks attractively priced relative to history and other asset classes, with income yields roughly three per cent higher than those on UK gilts."

Standard Life, established in 1825, provides life assurance, pensions and investment management products to over 6.5 million customers worldwide. As of June 2009, it had total assets under administration of £156.5 billion.
